What is phonk

Phonk is a subgenre of hip hop music that originated in the Southern United States, particularly in Memphis, Tennessee in the mid-1990s. It is characterized by its dark and often horrorcore-inspired sound, which is heavily influenced by gangsta rap, crunk, and underground hip hop.

Phonk music is typically slow-paced, with heavy, downtuned basslines and often features haunting and atmospheric soundscapes. Lyrics often focus on themes of violence, drug use, and street life, and are frequently delivered in a slow, drawling style.

Phonk music gained popularity in the early 2000s, particularly among underground hip hop enthusiasts, and has since influenced a range of other genres, including trap and drill. Notable phonk artists include DJ Paul, Juicy J, and SpaceGhostPurrp.
