Hollywoodland
The Hollywoodland sign was erected in 1923 by the owners of the real estate development called Hollywoodland. It was intended to be an “advertising sign” to promote the sale of property within the new subdivision. The sign originally read "Hollywoodland" and was created as a marketing tactic for a new housing development that would be called “Hollywoodland”, likely named after the California holly growing in the area.
The sign was altered in late 1949 to read HOLLYWOOD. The original sign was meant to stand for only 18 months, but it remained for over 25 years until it fell into disrepair. In 1949, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce decided to repair and rebuild the sign, removing the "land" part to make it read HOLLYWOOD.
The Hollywood sign has become a cultural icon, representing the glamour and allure of the American film industry. It has been featured in numerous films, TV shows, and advertisements, and is a popular tourist attraction in Los Angeles.
