How to Make Bife à Portuguesa (Portuguese-Style Steak)
To make a traditional Portuguese-style steak, known as Bife à Portuguesa, you'll need the following ingredients:
- 1.5 kg beef steak (preferably ribeye or striploin)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 cups shredded potatoes
- 1 cup Portuguese-style sauce (see below)
Portuguese-Style Sauce
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 onions, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup red wine
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
- In a large bowl, mix together olive oil, garlic, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Add the beef steak and marinate for at least 30 minutes.
- In a large skillet, heat the butter over medium heat. Add the beef steak and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until browned. Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add more butter if necessary, then add the chopped onions and cook until softened. Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- Add the Portuguese-style sauce to the skillet, bringing to a simmer. Add the shredded potatoes and cook until they're tender and golden brown.
- Return the beef steak to the skillet, spooning some of the potato and sauce mixture over the top.
- Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the steak reaches your desired level of doneness.
- Remove the skillet from the oven and let the steak rest for a few minutes before serving.
