What is a “progressive Christian”?
A progressive Christian is a term used to describe Christians who have a more liberal or progressive approach to their faith. They often reject the traditional or fundamentalist interpretations of Christianity, instead embracing a more open-minded and inclusive understanding of the Bible and Christianity.
Progressive Christians tend to focus on social justice, compassion, and equality, and often prioritize these values over traditional Christian doctrine. They may also be more accepting of diversity, including LGBTQ+ individuals, and may be more open to interfaith dialogue and collaboration.
Some common characteristics of progressive Christians include:
They often interpret the Bible in a more metaphorical or symbolic way, rather than taking it literally.
They may question or reject certain traditional Christian teachings, such as the inerrancy of the Bible or the concept of original sin.
They tend to focus on the teachings of Jesus, such as love, compassion, and social justice, rather than on doctrine or dogma.
They may be more open to the idea of other religions or spiritual paths being valid, rather than seeing Christianity as the only true way.
Some notable progressive Christian organizations and individuals include the Progressive Christian Alliance, Sojourners, and authors such as Brian McLaren and Rachel Held Evans.
