In this chapter, the Salton Sea appears as a desolate, alien landscape, almost a post-apocalyptic graveyard in the heart of California. The vast, still lake stretches to the horizon as a blue line merging with the sky, yet its natural beauty is marred by water rendered foul and unfit for swimming under the desert’s relentless heat. The shores, rather than sandy, are a mass of fish bones, resembling an endless expanse of white sand at first glance but revealing a chilling roughness on closer look. In the middle of the water, a rusted swing set sways like a forgotten relic, while on the shore, a worn-out, baroque armchair sits like an abandoned throne. Nearby, an old, rusted sign reads: "The only other thing is... Nothing." This surreal, hostile landscape mirrors Damian's psychological state, weary and drained, as he perceives the Salton Sea as a place of utter isolation and hopelessness—a visual symbol of his inner turmoil and his impending encounter with fate.
