*The Boy Who Loved Fish* On the small island of Bau in Fiji, there lived a cheerful boy named Ilaitia. Every morning, as the golden sun peeked over the horizon, he would grab his fishing net and paddle his wooden canoe into the calm blue waters. The ocean was his playground, and the fish were his friends—though he loved eating them just as much as he loved catching them. Ilaitia’s favorite spot was near the reef, where colorful fish darted between the corals. With practiced hands, he would cast his net, humming an old Fijian tune "Ko Bau na Yanuyanu" his grandfather had taught him. Some days, he caught small fish; other times, fat snappers or even a stubborn octopus that wriggled in protest. Back in the village, his mother would greet him with a warm smile. "Ah, my little fisherman returns!" she would say, taking his catch. Soon, the air filled with the delicious aromatic fish roasting over an open fire, seasoned with coconut, lemon and ginger. Ilaitia would sit cross-legged on the woven mat, his mouth watering as he waited for the first crispy bite. One evening, as the village gathered for a feast, the chief patted Ilaitia on the back. "You are the best fisherman in Bau," he said with a chuckle. "But remember, the sea gives us food—so we must always protect it." Laitia nodded, his belly full and his heart happy. For as long as the waves kissed the serene white sandy shores of Bau, he would fish, feast, and care for the ocean that fed his people. At night, with the stars twinkling above, the boy who loved fish drifted to sleep, dreaming of tomorrow’s catch.
