Xero was founded in July 2006 by Rod Drury, a New Zealand technology entrepreneur. Drury served as the CEO of Xero until 2018, when he stepped down and Steve Vamos took over as CEO. Before founding Xero, Drury established Glazier Systems, a New Zealand software development and consulting company, in 1995. He sold the company and invested in Xero, which was originally called Accounting 2.0.
Under Drury's leadership, Xero grew rapidly, and by 2017, the company had more than one million customers globally. In 2018, Drury remained on the board as a non-executive director after stepping down as CEO.
In 2022, Drury invested in Atomic.io, a communications tech company founded by former Xero employees. Today, Xero is a leading cloud accounting platform for small businesses, with over 4 million subscribers globally.
